Advocacy

Delivering vital services
when and where victims
need them most

We provide assistance with obtaining orders of protection for survivors in the Family, Criminal and Integrated Domestic Violence Court and have LI Against Domestic Violence Advocates in all seven Suffolk County Police Precincts to assist survivors immediately following an incident.  To speak with an advocate, call our 24-hour hotline (631)666-8833.

Precinct Advocacy

We place an advocate in all seven Suffolk County Police Department Precincts and make vital victim services available immediately following a violent incident. This is a critical time when interventions make a huge difference in ensuring the safety of the victim and any children and securing legal protections. Advocates can also meet with clients in the hospitals in their precinct area.

Our advocates also provide police officers with valuable insight into the issue of domestic violence, so that police are best able to respond to domestic incidents.

Our Precinct Advocates:

  • Educate victims about the dynamics of an abusive relationship
  • Explain what to expect if a police report is filed
  • Go over the options available under the law, including orders of protection
  • Assist in developing a safety plan
  • Link clients with our court advocacy and shelter services as well as other community resources
  • Available to respond to Hospitals to meet survivors when medical attention is needed

Court Advocacy

Our Court Advocates are available to accompany victims in Family, District and Supreme Court. They provide support and direct assistance in obtaining orders of protection. They also can assist with safety assessments and safety planning, and provide referrals to our other services and additional community resources.
